slidn' thru

The year is 2025. As illusions of progress crumble before our very eyes, history and much that has been fought for is under siege. Now more than ever the calls to come together… to move together are apparent.

Looking back at what was, while worried for what is to come, three bodies turn to social dances which emerged from the U.S. in the 70’s and the nostalgic tracks which accompanied them.
Reflecting upon what it means to stay supple, keep cool and utilise joyful resistance in the face of precarious times, they do a dance turned ritual intended to serve as a reminder that we’ve been here before, and that we’ll get through it together.

reframing nostalgia
There will always be many ways to understand the past.
What was and the narratives that allow us to construct past events can be complex and depending on one’s own interpretation, oppositional and contentious.
But in a time where the nuance of what “was” is being strong armed by those who have the power to determine or perhaps rather dictate not just what’s remembered, but how it’s remembered, one may think perhaps it’s time to reconsider or reframe notions around nostalgia.

So as illusions of progress crumble before our very eyes, achievements and much that has been fought for is under threat, one can find themselves thinking…

“now what?”

Now more than ever the calls to come together, to move together are apparent.

Looking back at what was, while worried for what is to come, in Slidin’ thru three bodies turn to social dances which emerged from the U.S. in the 70’s & 80’s and the nostalgic tracks which accompanied them.

A site specific work imagined for spaces with a certain spacious-social-dance-hall character (i.e. old banquet hall’s and gymnasiums) or outdoors (i.e. squares and basketball courts).

The wish is that we are not only setting these social dances in social spaces, sites for coming together, but hopefully accessing a certain energy embedded in the space that would encourage others in the end of it all to join in.

Slidin’ thru is a piece that reflects upon what it means to stay supple, keep cool and utilise joyful resistance in the face of precarious times, a dance turned ritual offers as a reminder that we’ve been here before, and that we’ll get through it together.
